Anajose | Conference Co-Chair

Anajose Reyes Guevara (she/her) is a co-chair of GSU 2023 and currently a third year Biology student at UNB. Anajose has always been particularly fascinated by marine biology and soon plans to begin an honours thesis focusing on salt marshes as fish nurseries! Outside of school, Anajose is the Vice-Chair of the University Women’s Centre as well as the Event Coordinator for UNB’s Biology Society. As a member of the Reds Dance Team, Anajose is always dancing or listening to music, or both! Having attended GSU as a high school student, she is beyond thrilled to now be part of this team and to share what we have in store with all of our delegates!

 

Kate | Conference Co-Chair

Kate Tucker (she/her) is a co-chair for Girls STEM Up 2023. She is in her fourth year, currently working on her Master’s in Applied Health Services Research, and recently graduated from UNB’s Renaissance College Leadership program with a minor in health sciences. She loves filling her free time with various community initiatives, and tries to spend as much time outside as she can. She also loves listening to podcasts (currently obsessed with “You Are Not “Too Busy” Podcast”), trying new crafts, and staying active. Kate is a longtime advocate for women and girls in STEM, she is thrilled to be using that passion for action through Girls STEM Up!

Mariel | Graphic Design Chair

Mariel Reyes (she/her) is the Graphic Design Chair for Girls Stem Up 2023. Mariel is currently attending NBCCD where she is studying visual arts and hopes to continue her education to get her degree in design. Having both a passion for visual arts and mathematics she knew design was the perfect combination of both fields. Mariel loves sewing, crocheting, and knitting. So, you can always find her making clothes for herself and her family. Mariel is currently treasurer of the NBCCD Student Association and is excited to be part of yet another team that promotes diversity and education.

Allie | Tech Chair

This is Allie Pugh (She/her) and she is the tech chair for the Girls Stem Up 2023 conference. 

Allie is currently enrolled in her last semester at UNB where she is taking Environmental Management. Throughout her degree she has focused on water management and biology as she fell in love with researching the importance of the marine and freshwater ecosystems. 

Upon graduating, Allie hopes to continue school and/or be a part of a research team that focuses on studying marine life and ecosystems. 

In her free time, Allie loves taking her dog Salmon for walks along the beautiful Wolastoq river. 

Sheridan | Communications Chair

Sheridan Hamilton (she/her) is GSU's Communications Chair. Sheridan is in her fourth year of Biology, minoring in Anthropology, and is currently working on her Biology honours project. She loves getting involved on campus as a Science Peer Mentor, a member of the UNB Mental Health Association, Menstrual Health Society and the STU Gerontology Society, and as an executive for Connect the Thoughts. She also enjoys volunteering at a local nursing home, listening to podcasts (TPWKY is her favourite!), and (somewhat aggressively) sharing science facts with anyone who will listen.

Ariane | Marketing Chair

Ariane Volpé (she/her) is GSU’s Marketing Chair for 2023. Ariane is currently in her second year of Medicinal Chemistry at UNB with the hopes of pursuing a career in this field. In addition to her interest in science, she enjoys mountain biking and listening to Taylor Swift on repeat. She is excited to be part of this year's executive team and can’t wait to share this conference with all future delegates!

Nicole A | Sponsorship Chair

Nicole Acupinpin (she/her) is this year’s Title Sponsorship Chair. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Psychology, minoring in Biology and specializing in Neuroscience at UNB. She is passionate about giving back to the community. She is also a believer in the power of research as a way to learn, help, and make an impact on the world. Nicole is a dedicated advocate for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals #4 and #5, which focuses on Quality Education and Gender Equality. Outside of school, you can find Nicole at a nearby airport, trying out new food, or reading a book! (She also might be listening to Taylor Swift or Noah Kahan on repeat).

Hannah | Small Business Sponsorship Chair

Hannah Tran (she/her) is the Small Business Sponsorship Chair for GSU 2023. Hannah is currently in her third year of biochemistry at UNB. She loves chemistry, skincare, and health and aspires to one day have a career that combines all these passions. She is also the School Outreach Coordinator for the UNB Menstrual Health Society. Outside of school, she enjoys art, volunteering at the hospital, and listening to music. Hannah’s first concert was Pitbull (and she wouldn’t have it any other way). As an attendee of GSU in high school, Hannah is super excited to be a part of this amazing team and work behind the scenes to provide an amazing conference experience for delegates!

Lois | Finance Chair

This is Lois Phillips (she/her) and she is the Finance Chair for GSU 2023. Lois is currently in her second year of chemical engineering at UNB. She chose this field because it combines her interest in mathematics and design and allows her to further explore her passion for environmental sustainability. She loves singing and cooking and would eventually like to set up her own curly hair care line. She is very excited to be part of the GSU team and make an impact on other young women in STEM!

Lucy | Keynote Speaker Chair

Lucy Kidney (she/her) is the Keynote Speakers Chair for GSU 2023. Lucy is currently in her second year of civil engineering at UNB. She hopes to later pursue a career that combines her love for engineering and passion for the environment. In her free time she likes walks along the Fredericton walking bridge and trying out new cafés. She spent the past summer mentoring a high school student who shares her ambition for engineering, and is super excited to make a positive impact on other young women interested in STEM!

Kristyn | Breakout Speakers Chair

Kristyn Serniuk (She/her) is the Breakout Speakers Chair for the Girls Stem Up 2023 conference. She is currently in her 3rd year of computer science at UNB and has loved getting involved in the women in computer science book club, volunteering through UNB S.P.R.I.N.G, and of course being an executive for GSU. Kristyn is from Mississauga Ontario and had never been to New Brunswick before going to UNB, she has enjoyed exploring Fredericton and the rest of Atlantic Canada since moving here.

Denisha | Logistics Chair

Denisha Teresa Coelho (she/her) is one of the logistics chairs for the 2023 Girls STEM Up conference. She is currently in her third year pursuing her degree in Kinesiology and minoring in Psychology with a specialization in Neuroscience. She is also the Co-President of the Undergraduate Psychology Society at UNB, a peer mentor for international students and works at UNB Counselling services! Denisha is passionately committed to advancing the representation of women of colour in STEM. Outside of school, you can find her thrift shopping, booking flight tickets, reminiscing about being an athlete, rewatching Grey’s Anatomy or trying to find spicy food!

Nicole G | Logistics Chair

Nicole Georges (she/her) is one of the logistics chairs for the 2023 Girls STEM Up conference. She is currently in her fourth year of a biology-chemistry degree with hopes of pursuing her honours next year! Nicole is also the logistics chair for UNB’s Connect The Thoughts Interdisciplinary health case competition, can be found in the Chem Soc most days after classes and enjoys spending time with her friends and family! She is excited to connect with others through this conference and hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams in STEM!!

 

Swati | Member at Large

Swati Jay (she/her) is a member at large for GSU 2023 and in her 2nd year of Biology.   With an interest in molecular biology, in the summer she plans on researching mutations in a DNA-binding transcription activator protein. In her free time she volunteers at a middle school as a English tutor and is likely found watching baking shows on Netflix. She can’t wait to be a part of a great team and looks forward to meeting you all!!!

 

Casey | University Delegate Chair

Casey Leonard (she/her/hers) is one of the University Delegate Chairs for the 2023 Girls STEM Up Conference. Casey is currently at UNB taking a bachelor of science majoring in molecular biology. In Casey's free time she volunteers at The 203 - The Centre For Gender and Sexual Diversity as well as the Connell Memorial Hall Herbarium. Outside of her volunteer work she likes to go for walks and takes care of her betta fish Windsor. Casey is excited to help plan the conference this year and can’t wait to see everyone in person on conference day!

Amy | University Delegate Chair

Amy Thomson (she/her) is one of the University Delegates Chairs for Girls STEM Up 2023. She is in her fourth year of a BSc in Kinesiology at UNB and completing an honours in the area of exercise physiology. In her free time Amy volunteers with S.P.R.I.N.G, URec, and two research labs. Outside of volunteering Amy loves to read, stay active, and be involved on campus through a number of clubs and societies. Next year Amy is hoping to complete a MSc in Kinesiology and work in health science research! Amy has always been passionate about getting girls more involved in STEM and is super excited to be involved in the conference this year!

Ally | High School Delegate Chair

This is Allyson Murray (she/her) and she is the High School Delegate Chair for the 2023 Girls STEM Up Conference.  Allyson is currently taking a Bachelor of Sciences pursuing a Biochemistry major.  She loves working with children and plans to combine this passion with her studies to eventually to work in the health field as a pediatrician.  

Allyson’s very first and only concert she’s ever been to was Justin Bieber when she was 10 years old.
